Guest Post By Victoria Glen: A year ago today she was dying...

1 year ago today my life was saved by a complete stranger!!

My name is Victoria, I'm 28 years old and a year ago I was dying with end stage Cystic Fibrosis. For those who have never heard of CF it is a genetic lung disease, the most common in the UK and at least 3 people die of this disease every week!! I had gotten to the stage where I was on oxygen 24 hours a day, I was tube fed the nutrition's I needed because my body burned it off too quickly while it constantly fought off infections, I was in hospital for months at a time, I had no energy to do anything even brushing my hair exhausted me. At my lowest my lung function was 14%, just imagine what it would be like if only 14% of your lungs worked!! I needed a double lung transplant and I needed it badly!

On May 16 2010 after being on the transplant waiting list for 1 year and 7 months with 10 false alarm calls, I finally got what I had been waiting for. My life was transformed!! I no longer needed oxygen or tube feeds, I had energy I hadn't experienced in years and I was able to start living my life and not just exist like I did when I was on the list.

A stranger gave me my life back! They were thoughtful enough to sign up to the organ donation register and be my hero. I was one of the lucky ones and got my transplant but others aren't so lucky, there is a high chance of those on the waiting list not getting their transplants in time because of a shortage of donors. Did you know you are more likely to need a transplant than to become a donor?

Please think of my lovely donor and her family tonight as they mourn the loss of their lovely daughter but know that their brave decision to allow her organs to be donated saved at least one life. Also consider signing up to the Organ Donor Register and give someone a chance at living again!!
